ISO and UNDP Release First Global Standard for UN SDG Management
ISO and UNDP unveiled ISO/UNDP 53001, a management systems standard for the UN Sustainable Development Goals, at the ISO Annual Meeting in Paris.
PARIS — The International Organization for Standardization and the United Nations Development Programme on Sept. 28, 2026, jointly launched what officials describe as the world's first International Standard designed specifically to help organizations advance action on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The standard, designated ISO/UNDP 53001, establishes management system requirements tied to the 17 UN SDGs. It was unveiled on the opening day of the ISO Annual Meeting, lending a high-profile platform to a framework that the two bodies say fills a long-standing gap in how institutions, companies, and governments can systematically align their operations with global development targets.

Management system standards of this kind typically provide organizations with a structured, auditable approach to meeting defined objectives — similar in architecture to widely adopted standards such as ISO 9001 for quality management or ISO 14001 for environmental management. By applying that model to the SDGs, ISO/UNDP 53001 aims to translate broad sustainability commitments into measurable, operational practice.
The collaboration between ISO, a Geneva-based independent standard-setting body with members in more than 160 countries, and UNDP, the UN's global development network, signals a push to bring formal accountability mechanisms to sustainability pledges that critics have long argued lack enforceable structure. The Paris launch positions the standard as a potential reference tool for both public-sector entities and private corporations navigating ESG and sustainability reporting requirements.
